Skills to know: Data Analytics 101
THIS POST IS FROM NOVEMBER 1, 2017.
Some skills are daunting. The simple idea of them leaves you feeling nervous, aptly underprepared and has you running in the opposite direction by the mere mention of it. Data is one of those words that sometimes carries a negative connotation. Recently, you may have heard whispers that data analytics is becoming an important and integral part of the public relations process.
You may sit back, scratch your head and frantically think to yourself, ‘I chose PR so I didn’t have to deal with numbers!’
Take a deep breath, relax.
Data is not as scary as you think it is. To be honest, once you start exploring what data can do, you might even enjoy it.
Data has become the new and efficient way for PR, advertising and marketing professionals to measure their content. This way, you get a better grasp on how well your content is actually working. You use ‘metrics’ to measure where and who your content is reaching — and who is interacting with it. This data gives you insights to better evaluate and set goals for your clients — depending on what the data tells you.
Oh, did I forget to mention there’s hardly any math involved? Math haters, rejoice! Because even you can take part in data analytics.
There are many ways to get your foot in the door with the changing landscape of data analytics. Some of these ways are free and right under your fingertips.
You can get training through Google Analytics and Hubspot for free. All it takes is your time.
Google Analytics also provides free training through the Google Analytics Academy, or if you’re a student, you can find training through www.lynda.com.
So, instead of being scared of data, explore what data can do for your career and start taking some of the steps to get there before it’s too late.
